Four students from Rosemount High School (RHS) shared their stories about the importance of music in their lives. They all attended an EMSB elementary school before going to RHS.

Eva Marra, Secondary V: “I have had the pleasure of being part of the EMSB since Kindergarten at General Vanier Elementary School. I have been in school choirs, the guitar club and now the music Arts-études program at Rosemount High School. Music in general has always been a big part of my life since a young age. Being part of Rosemount’s senior band lets me bring my love for music farther and opens up opportunities. Music gives me a positive outlet to channel my emotions into and reduces my stress from higher intensity classes. Playing my instrument – the baritone – gives me time for self-expression and creates a sense of accomplishment.”

Joseph John Varga, Secondary IV: “My introduction to music was when I was at Dante Elementary School. I was fascinated by music and the ability to create it. The first time Ms. (Debbie) Best and her symphonic winds from Rosemount High School came to my elementary school for Christmas, I was immediately inspired. I was witnessing the essence of music, live. It was beautiful. So, in Grade 4 I made a decision to go to Rosemount High and be a part of the music program. But I needed an instrument that I liked and wanted to play. In Grade 6, I was drawn to the style of jazz, disco and funk. I thought to myself, ‘this is my type of music.’ This led to the discovery of the tenor saxophone. I was so drawn to this instrument, and it was the answer I was seeking. Rosemount’s music program was what was going to nourish this dream of being a saxophonist. Sure, I had struggles, but that did not stop me. Ms. Best and Mr. (Anthony) Cooperwood had my back and to this day still do. I have evolved thanks to the music program. It has given me a mindset and skills to guide me on the path to becoming a good musician and even a better person.”                                                                                   –

Camillo Di Marco, Secondary IV: “My interest in music stems from the countless hours of joy that I spent with my dad jamming out to some classic rock bands like Queen and U2. My mom was an alumna of Rosemount High School and whenever she spoke of all of her fond memories there, she'd always brag about how fun it was to be in the music program. Now that I’m in the music program, I couldn't agree more. Playing my tenor saxophone has truly been a gift, and I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to play all my favourite songs on the coolest instrument ever. Not only have I only played the sax at school, but I also have played at Disney World! It's all thanks to my lovely parents, my brilliant teachers and my wonderful school that I am able to access opportunities that I would not have had.”                                                          –

Alessio Ciarlariello, Secondary IV:  “Music has always been the cornerstone of my life, a part of me that allows me to express myself in ways words cannot. It’s the language of pure creativity – at least that’s how I see it.  My music journey began in elementary school at Dante, specifically in Grade 4, when our music teacher, Ms. Veronica, created an after-school program for Grade 5 and 6 students. They needed a slightly larger group to make it work, so I decided to join. That decision marked the start of my connection with music. Now, as a student in the music Arts-études program at Rosemount High School, I’ve had the chance to deepen my musical journey with skills like composition and performance. The opportunities provided by EMSB schools have helped me develop discipline, teamwork and other fundamental skills all while nurturing my love for music. I’m grateful for the journey so far and excited to continue pursuing my passion for music.”

Hyerin Jo, Secondary V:  “After moving to Montreal from South Korea in Grade 5, Bancroft Elementary School’s music class helped me continue my love for music, earning a music award at graduation. At Rosemount High School, the music program introduced me to the oboe, an instrument I never imagined learning. Now in Secondary V, I’ve learned four instruments from scratch, performed at various events, grown under the guidance of skilled and supportive teachers and connected with friends who share my passion. While I’ll soon leave the program, I know music will remain a central part of my life, thanks to the strong foundation built through the music Arts-études program at Rosemount.”
